National League Central Rumors and Updates

Theo Epstein has at long last resigned from the Boston Red Sox, and will officially be named President of the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Compensation has not been settled, though it is also expected to be done by Tuesday. The Cubs will not be sending top prospects Brett Jackson, Trey McNutt, or Matt Szczur to Boston, but the price is rumored to be two midlevel prospects and cash.

Padres General Manager Jed Hoyer will be announced as the new Cubs General Manager on Tuesday. Hoyer and his assistant, Jason McLeod, will receive five year deals from the Cubs. The Padres recently received a list of prospects that they can acquire from the Cubs in return for the two managers, though no one on th list is expected to be a top prospect.

Astros owner Jim Crane and Major League Baseball are discussing a $50 million compensation pending the Astros move to the American League West division. Crane purchased the team in May, for approximately $680 million. Because the price was $206 million above the actual worth of the team, Crane has leverage over Commissioner Bud Selig and the MLB.

Astros prospect Dustin Kellogg was killed in a car accident when his pick up truck collided with a freight truck just outside of Houston. Pitching for the Astros was the 18 year old's dream, and he appeared in six Gulf Coast games in his short career.

Allen Craig became the first player in MLB history to produce an RBI following his first inning home run on Saturday night. Each RBI he has driven in has been the go ahead run for the National League Champion Cardinals.

Albert Pujols is being criticized for ignoring the media following the Cardinals loss in game two of the World Series. Pujols made a costly error in the ninth inning of Thursday night's game that lead to a run in the Rangers 2-1 win. Along with Pujols, Lance Berkman, Matt Holiday, and Yadier Molina have each been accused of making spokesmen of younger players, while they bolt for the parking lot.

Joey Votto's name has been involved in trade rumors. Upon being asked by reporter Buster Olney about the reports, Reds Owner Walt Jockety denied any knowledge of the Reds listening to calls for the first baseman. The main reason for Votto being on the market is his steep contract, and the limited cap room of the Reds.

Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder will have their options declined by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Had Pittsburgh picked up the option on Doumit, he would be receive $15.5 over the next two years. Snyder would receive $6.75 over the course of the next year. Both catchers have spent vast amounts of time on the DL, though Doumit's bat will surely be missed in the everyday lineup. The Pirates do not yet have a viable backup catcher.

Gerit Cole, a draft pick of the Pirates out of UCLA, is already turning heads in only his second Arizona Fall League outing. During his second appearance, he broke 100 mph on seven different occasions. Per the Pittsburgh Tribune, the reaction from the visiting dugout was something along the lines of "You've gotta be kidding me!"

Brewers' slugger Prince Fielder announced at a press conference "It was awesome playing here", per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Fielder will test the open market, and undoubtedly receive an enormous contract. The rival Cubs are the favorite to land the all star first baseman, as first base is currently wide open in Chicago.
